Founded in 1998, Hyundai Hope on Wheels is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to fighting pediatric cancer through research funding and public awareness. Supported by Hyundai Motor America, over 855 dealers, and 17,000,000 customers, the organization donates a portion of every new vehicle sale to pediatric cancer research. By the end of 2026, donations will exceed $303 million.⁠

Increased detection, coding changes, and changing risk factors may play a role in the recorded uptick of childhood cancers. According to the National Cancer Institute, other types of environmental exposures have also been linked to the rise in pediatric cancers.

Some childhood cancers may have outside causes like radiation exposure, and others may have causes that have not yet been found. But many are likely to be the result of random events that sometimes happen inside a cell, without having an outside cause.

Childhood cancer is considered rare, with about 15,000 cases diagnosed annually in the United States in people under 20 years old. This corresponds to an incidence rate of 15.3 per 100,000 per year, or roughly 1 in 6,500 children and adolescents. However, the incidence rate varies by age, with children under 5 and those ages 15 to 19 experiencing the highest rates at 231 and 241 cases per million, respectively. Children ages 5 to 9 and 10 to 14 have lower rates at 127 and 158 cases per million, respectively.

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month (CCAM) is recognized every September by organizations, families, and individuals around the world. The goal of CCAM is to raise awareness and funds for children with cancer, their families, and those who care for them.

Pediatric cancer, also known as childhood cancer, is a term used to describe cancers that affect children from birth to 14 years of age, and sometimes teenagers between 15 and 19 years old. These cancers are rare and can differ from adult cancers in how they grow and spread, how they are treated, and how they respond to treatment.

Some common types of pediatric cancer include leukemia, brain and spinal cord tumors, bone and soft tissue cancers, osteosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma, lymphomas, neuroblastoma, Wilms tumor, and retinoblastoma.
